Baffle fishways (or baffle fishways) calculation formulas

For calculation of:

  • upstream head ha;
  • water level in the pass h;
  • flow Q;
  • flow velocity V;
  • upstream apron elevation Zr1;
  • minimal rake height of upstream side walls Zm

Refer to the formulas specific to each baffle fishway type:

Upstream water elevation Z1

Z1=Zd1+ha

With Zd1 the spilling elevation of the first upstream baffle, ha the upstream head.

Pass length

Pass length along a water line parallel to the pass slope Lw equals

Lw=(Z1Z2)1+S2S

with Z1 and Z2 the upstream and downstream water elevations, S the slope.

Pass length along the slope LS must be a multiple of the length between two baffles P rounded to the greater integer:

LS=(Lwϵ)/P×P

With ϵ = 1 mm to leave a margin before adding an extra baffle.

Horizontal projection of the pass length Lh thus equals:

Lh=LS1+S2

Number of baffles Nb

For plane and Fatou types:

Nb=LS/P+1

For superactive and mixed types:

Nb=LS/P

Downstream apron Zr2 and spilling Zd2 elevations:

Zr2=Zr1LS×S1+S2
Zd2=Zr2+Zd1Zr1
